Sensory Overload-What is it?

What is it:

Sensory overload happens when the brain receives more information than it can process. Sounds, lights, smells, texture and movement all flood in at once causing overloading of the nervous system. It is NOT a behavior problem but a brain response. When the sensory system becomes overloaded, the body goes into survival mode-causing the body to fight, flee, freeze or shutdown.

What is happening in the brain:

The sensory system is designed to filter information, but when input comes in too intense or unpredictable, that filter breaks down. The brain alarm center (amygdala) activates, flooding the body with stress signals. The child isn’t choosing the actions, their body is trying to protect them.

What it is not:

It is not attention seeking. It is not bad behavior. It is a nervous system doing its best to cope with an environment that feels unsafe or overwhelming. When we label or punish the response, we miss the communication underneath it.

How does it show up:
  • Covering ears or eyes
  • Refusing to join in or being defiant
  • Sudden anger, tears and/or withdrawal
  • Meltdowns or complete shutdowns
  • Complaining that things are too loud or too much
  • Sensitivity to tags, lights, crowds or sudden changes
  • A strong need to escape or hide
How it feels inside:

Everything feels louder, brighter, faster, closer. Thoughts scatter, heart races, skin tingles. Some children (and adults) describe it as being “trapped inside a noise” or feeling like “about to explode”. It is distressing and physically draining, leaving them exhausted afterwards.

How to help:
  • Reduce sensory input-lower lights, turn down music, soften voices, minimize clutter
  • Offer tools: headphones, fidget items, sunglasses, deep pressure (hugs or brushing)
  • Use calm steady tone & simple words
  • Give time to decompress-don’t demand instant recovery
  • Help them notice early signs and name them
  • Most of all stay calm, your nervous system helps them settle
