Autism is not a disease:
It is a different way of experiencing and processing the world. Needing accommodations, patience, understanding & flexibility.
Communication can look different:
Some may use words, others use devices, gestures or behaviors. All communication is valid, but can be different & vary from person to person.
Autism is a Spectrum:
Every person is different! Some need significant support, while others live independently. No two people or experiences are alike.
Autistic People have emotions:
Autistic individuals feel love, joy, sadness, empathy, and frustration just like everyone else.
Eye contact isn’t everything:
Avoiding eye contact doesn’t mean someone isn’t listening or that they are being disrespectful. It may be allowing them to focus. Not everyone is able to make eye contact.
Meltdowns are not tantrums:
Meltdowns are responses to overwhelming situations. They are not a form of manipulation or bad behavior. Just a way of communicating & responding to a situation.
Autism is lifelong:
Autism does not go away with age. Children with autism grow up to be adults with autism.
Stimming is normal & helpful:
Repetitive movements like hand-flapping or rocking help regulate emotions and manage sensory input.
Autistic people want to have friends:
Socializing may be challenging for many on the spectrum. Individuals with autism deeply value connections and friendships.
